Swimming

Jaimie on Dec 4th 2007

Alexa and I do Mommy and Me swim classes at the YMCA every Saturday morning. When I signed us up, it seemed like a great idea. I did the same swim classes with CJ three times before he turned three, the last class was actually when I was very pregnant with Alexa.

What my child-addled brain failed to remember is that the first time I did the class with CJ, he was 18 months. Not 13 months. There’s a big difference, it turns out.

Alexa loves the class itself. However, she doesn’t really do much different in the pool than she does in the bathtub. She refuses to stand on the edge and jump in (and honestly, I don’t think she physically can), she won’t let her head go under water, and she won’t float on her back. She doesn’t really understand scooping (front stroke) or kicking, so the class is basically me playing with her in the water. Maybe not worth the price of the class, but at least she’s having fun and it is a nice togetherness activity.

The problem arises when it is time to be done. From the moment we walk into the locker room until the moment we leave for home, if she is put down, she screams. And screams. And SCREAMS. It is impossible to change out of a wet bathing suit without putting her down. And I need to change her as well, which I can’t do and hold her at the same time very well. If it was warm outside I might just try to take us home wet, but it is very very cold, so change we must.

And she screams.

She is generally a pretty mellow child so I don’t know why she hates the locker room so much, but she does. Anticipating the locker room afterwards makes me dread going to the lessons. But at least she has fun during them - and they only go until mid-December.

I think we’ll wait to do it again until she’s a bit older, and it is very warm outside.

It was good to hear that there is a difference between a 13 month old and an 18 month old. Sometimes I think I’m trying to force activities too young…

Here’s hoping she adjusts to that locker room soon! :)

Sometimes I wonder about when would be the right time to start my future kids on educational and athletic activities. Good luck with the locker room…it sounds like a really fun activity. :)
