Gymnastics Update

Jaimie on Dec 5th 2007

So gymnastics class has actually improved. Some of which was initiated by the studio, and some I think was just an accident of circumstance. But I’ll take what I can get.

The class started with 10 kids, and that number has steadily dwindled. I don’t know if some of the other parents were just even more fed up than I was, but last week’s class hit a new low of 5 students. 5 students to one teacher is a much better ratio (although I’m still not thrilled with it).

Also, this past week, the instructor was training a new instructor, so there were actually two instructors with the class. Which meant that when the majority of kids had downtime, there was actually an instructor supervising them. What a concept! And that made things go a LOT smoother. I can only hope it is repeated this week. Not holding my breath though.

And the downtime has partially improved as well. The class generally does two main activities each session - this week was rings and cartwheels. The downtime activities for the ring portion were actually varied and interesting (small trampoline, a tumbling activity, a climbing structure with a slide, and a few random hoops and things for them to climb through and play with) and there was enough different things to keep all the children occupied at the same time. However the downtime activity for the cartwheel portion was a memory card game. It did go a lot better, even with the limited choice and having to share, with an instructor supervising instead of the kids doing free-for-all.

Bossy Pink was still there (although she was Bossy Leopard-Print that day) and I decided she likes to boss CJ around. Since she didn’t have a lot of opportunity to tell him what to do in the downtime activities, she told him where to sit in line when they waited their first turns and if he was sitting too close to her. In fact once, I saw her purposely get up, move over to where CJ was in line, squeeze herself in next to him, and then proceed to tell him he was sitting too close to her. Heh. He didn’t seem to mind her attention too much and since there were only 5 kids, things moved faster overall and she got less chances to annoy him.

He still loves it regardless of my own reservations about the entire thing. Only two classes left. I hope he gets over it ending as easily as he did soccer this summer, because there is no way I am signing him up for this class again. Despite the recent improvements.
