The Diet Has Arrived

Jaimie on Jan 30th 2008

Matt had his meeting with the nutritionist today and came home with a seven day meal plan.

It has fish.

It has beans.

It has yogurt.

And no doritoes.

To say he is disappointed would be an understatement. Scared is a more accurate depiction of his general frame of mind. And I’m a little scared too - it doesn’t tell me how to cook anything, just says things like “4 oz Flounder”. Flounder? Um… well… okay. Flounder.

I really am going to try. I will give this my best shot. I’m nervous about how much all the fish will cost, and how little Matt will eat of what I prepare, and how much he might whine. But we’re going to try. He’s already whining and the meal plan doesn’t start until next Monday.

Please, wish us luck.

Good luck! Flounder? Tilapia is much yummier.

Good luck! And I agree with Emily. Tilapia is much better. It tastes less fishy, too. And I don’t know what stores you have around you (we have Winco), but sometimes you can find bags of frozen Tilapia fillets that aren’t real expensive.

Best of luck! Kroger has fish as a loss leader often. Check the frozen section too.

I really really like flounder. Yum. Seared in lemon and butter.
And I have an excellent black beans recipe.

Mahi mahi is also really yummy, and so is halibut.

Tell Matt to suck it up - his long term health is more important than his daily dining experience.

I’ve improved my diet a lot over the past year and while I don’t enjoy eating salad at every dinner and reducing bad foods, I do it because it’s good for me - not because I like it.

I’m using my Dad as inspiration - watching his steep decline over the last few years because of diabetes and other things which were probably partly caused from lifestyle issues has made me realize that I need to do what I can to be healthier. I don’t want to be providing my son with that same kind of negative inspiration in 30 years…

You can get cheap fish at the Dollar Tree in the frozen section.
They have 3 oz Salmon, Haddock, and Mahi-Mahi steaks.

Ask the nutritionist about Whole Wheat SunChips. They taste like Doritoes, but are healthy (try the SALSA or harvest Cheddar flavors if you like Doritos)

Please read my post in the area where you listed his likes & dislikes.

I have studied nutrition myself, as I had intended to become a nurse.

If he fails on the dietician/nutritionist’s diet, you may want to try out some of my suggestions over there. If his levels were almost normal (as you claimed), there’s no need for the sweeping lifestyle change. Just make a few key product swaps & he will stablize within a month or two.

A diet like the one prescribed may actually BACKFIRE! He may become so depressed about the diet that his adrenaline causes his serum cholesterol to become thicker & clog up his arteries- leading to a HEART ATTACK or STROKE!

Please keep an eye on his MOOD to see if you are compromising his health by causing him misery/depression!

Unfortunately, Tilapia is not on the list…

Anyway, I figure it’s only for 12 weeks and I’ll probably lose some unneeded pounds. Afterwords, hopefully I found some new, healthier foods that I would never have tried otherwise. I figure there is middle ground between where I am eating now and what I’ll be eating in the next 12 weeks. I have been very slowly improving my numbers the past 2 years by replacing some snacks with fruit, but figured I could use a little “push”.

Good luck, Matt! :) You’ve got a great attitude!

Make little foil packets with the fish in there and some veggies, plenty of seasoning and lemon juice and throw them in the oven. I’m trying to get my cholesterol down so I can relate. It is fish city around here. Luckily my husband and teenage boys like fish. I get frozen fish at Sam’s Club.
