Yes No Stop Go

Jaimie on Feb 29th 2008

CJ can read, and no one told me.

Well, maybe no one knew.

We were playing a puzzle game on PBS Kids today, and when you make the pieces too large the computer says (in text) TOO BIG! And without me telling him what it said, CJ laughed and said “Too big!”.

And I thought, how odd, that’s what it says. And then I realized he was READING what it said.

I’m not sure how unobservant of a parent I am that my child learned to read without me so much as noticing. I’m not saying he is terribly advanced and can read fluently at 3 - the reading he is doing is purely sight-reading and is limited to the words he’s memorized up in his head. But still. I thought I would have noticed.

I wrote a bunch of short words I could think of on a piece of paper and asked CJ to read them, and he readily identified Stop, Go, Yes, and No without any hesitation. He also knows his name (which we did already know) and he can recognize most of his classmates’ names as well (that must have come from school of course). I don’t think the rest came from school though, we get sheets of what they work on every day and there haven’t been any reading/word worksheets or notes, just individual letters.

I need to think of more words he might know. I did teach him “Red” and “Jump” today.

In A Minute

Jaimie on Feb 28th 2008

Do you do anything habitually that you don’t realize until your child parrots it back at you?

My kids are constantly showing me my own odds turns of phrase and gestures by example. Most recently, Alexa was hanging out with Matt on the couch watching Cars. She loooooves Cars. Loves.

I came into the room and said something to Alexa, I don’t even remember what now. But without even looking at me, she held up her hand towards me with one finger up in the air, my own gesture for “In a minute”, which I must use a whole lot without realizing. I wasn’t sure if it was just coincidence that she did that or not, but after the scene she was watching was over, she then put her hand down and looked at me.

It was “In a minute” all right.

The things we teach our kids…

Kick the Crud to the Curb

Jaimie on Feb 27th 2008

I went to the doctor today to find out why everyone but me seems to be getting better.

Oh, and Alexa now has the flu too. Yippee. CJ is all better though and Matt is close to better.

I found out that not only do I in fact have the flu (duh) I also have a secondary sinus infection. Which explains the insane headaches. Yeehaw.

So now I am on augmentim. Hopefully that kicks the crud to the curb. And I am supposed to rest. Fat chance of that since Matt goes back to work tomorrow…

I hardly ever got sick before I had a kid who went to school. This winter I’ve been very sick twice. bah. I better acclimate to all to all the new germs soon, I don’t approve of this at all. ;)

Give and Take

Jaimie on Feb 26th 2008

I said in yesterday’s post that Matt was spared from the icky flu bug that invaded our house. But in fact, I spoke too soon. He woke up in the middle of the night and told me he felt terrible, and proceeded to shiver his way through most of the rest of the night. The poor boy had a fever and the chills (exactly what I had had the night before that) and was pretty miserable.

When you are a parent, it is hard enough when you are sick and your spouse is well to be able to rest and recuperate, especially if any of your kids are sick too. But when you and your spouse are both sick, it becomes close to impossible. Someone needs to take care of the kids. We are not fortunate enough to have family living nearby that we can ask to help us out in times like these, so we muddle through. But it isn’t fun.

Luckily, Matt ended up being not quite as sick as I was on my sickest day, so we basically alternated resting and being in charge. Matt slept most of the morning while I took care of a much better but stayed home from school just in case CJ and a perfectly fine Alexa, and then I rested most of the afternoon while Matt took care of everyone. Both of us would have liked to have just lied around all day and moaned (well, I would have) but we managed, and I’m even feeling slightly chipper now. Slightly.

Matt is a better person than I. I would have chosen to stay in bed all day and moan.

Snuggles

Jaimie on Feb 25th 2008

The flu has come to our house. Somehow, Alexa and Matt completely escaped it (so far), but CJ and I have been hit hard. We’ve been running fevers and throwing up and generally feeling awful.

But a side benefit to the flu is that we’ve had a lot of snuggle time. CJ and I take up residence in my bed upstairs, and nap fitfully and snuggle. I like the snuggles.

I do not like the flu however, and will be happy when it passes completely.

I will miss the snuggles, though.
