And Then There Were Four

Jaimie on Feb 8th 2008

I mentioned yesterday that CJ has three lovies. It started with a puppy, which he decided one night he wanted to sleep with. He’d never asked to sleep with a stuffed animal before, but he quickly decided that he needed to sleep with that puppy every single night. That went on for a few months, and then one day he found a small stuffed elephant in his sister’s room, and he adopted that as well. Now Puppy and Elephant had to be present at bedtime every night, and once in a while one would be hiding behind the bed or under a pillow and a search ensued until the missing animal was found.

Then one night, for no reason I understood, Tiger took residence in the bed. Now we were up to three loveys, and it was hard to keep track of them all. I was not all that thrilled, but what could I do. So every night, it was three animals, 4 blankets (yet another story) and CJ.

Last night… there was a leopard in the bed! Matt let him introduce yet another lovey!

I convinced CJ the tiger and leopard wanted to hang out on his nightstand. For the night at least. Maybe the leopard will be forgotten by tonight.

But probably not. I think we are up to 4 loveys. By the time he’s in kindergarten I won’t be able to fit him in the bed.

I swear our kids are leading parallel lives … in too many way if you know what I mean. My daughter now has to have her babies in bed with her and she goes thru this elaborate ritual of tucking them in and kissing them goodnight. And then she has to squeeze herself in there so as not to disturb them. All because I was trying to make room in the playroom so I put all of her dolls and stuffed animals in a plastic tub in her room. The tub is lonely, her bed is … not!

At least he picks soft lovies to sleep with. My son likes to take his entire hot wheels collection to bed.

We’ve gone through this phase with all 3 of our girls. Abby had a whole menagerie at one point - it was quite amusing. At 6-1/2 she’s down to one blanket, one teddy bear and her new Webkinz kitty. Hannah will sleep with a favorite stuffed animal for a few days and then ignore it after that - she’s not attached to anything in particular.

Our youngest currently sleeps with all 5 of her Backyardigans stuffed animals, plus her blanket and usually a board book or two. She piles everything in the middle of her pillow (even the books), then lays right down on top of them and goes to sleep. What a goof! :)

Ohh yes. We have two Tigger’s, a Triceratops, a kitty, and every night it seems like it’s someone new. When will it end. She’s going to be smothered in lovies one night. Ahh to be young.
