And Then There Were Four

Jaimie on Feb 8th 2008

I mentioned yesterday that CJ has three lovies. It started with a puppy, which he decided one night he wanted to sleep with. He’d never asked to sleep with a stuffed animal before, but he quickly decided that he needed to sleep with that puppy every single night. That went on for a few months, and then one day he found a small stuffed elephant in his sister’s room, and he adopted that as well. Now Puppy and Elephant had to be present at bedtime every night, and once in a while one would be hiding behind the bed or under a pillow and a search ensued until the missing animal was found.

Then one night, for no reason I understood, Tiger took residence in the bed. Now we were up to three loveys, and it was hard to keep track of them all. I was not all that thrilled, but what could I do. So every night, it was three animals, 4 blankets (yet another story) and CJ.

Last night… there was a leopard in the bed! Matt let him introduce yet another lovey!

I convinced CJ the tiger and leopard wanted to hang out on his nightstand. For the night at least. Maybe the leopard will be forgotten by tonight.

But probably not. I think we are up to 4 loveys. By the time he’s in kindergarten I won’t be able to fit him in the bed.

The Post I Didn’t Want To Write

Jaimie on Feb 7th 2008

I had all these ideas swirling about in my head, but then something happened that threw them all out the window and I can’t think of anything else to say. No, it isn’t bad, it is funny, sort of, and I’ll get to it in a minute.

Before I sat down to write this though I cast about desperately for anything else coherent to say, and asked Matt what he thought I should write about. He suggested I tell you all that it is day 4 of his diet and he broke down and cheated tonight and ate an extra piece of celery for a snack. I mean… really? You think cheating on your diet with celery is exciting? Break out the ice cream, dude!

Speaking of ice cream, double churned lowfat ice cream is actually pretty darn good. Matt got 2 oz with dinner tonight. 2 oz is seriously not a lot of ice cream. I had 4 oz. I’m not the one on a diet. That still wasn’t much I thought.

But, anyway, back to what I can’t get out of my head until I spit it out here. CJ sleeps with three stuffed animals. We never introduced stuffed animals to him as loveys, he just naturally acquired these three over time. It started with just a dog, and then an elephant, and now a tiger is also included. He was cuddling his stuffed animals as I tucked him in and kissed him good night last night, and then as I was leaving he said, very clearly, “My penis.”

I turned around, and he was wagging the dog’s tail (a very stumpy stubby tail) back and forth and saying, “Look, my penis.”

So, I swallowed my laughter, and explained, first off, it wasn’t his, it was the dog’s, and secondly, it was a tail not a penis. And showed him the tiger and elephant’s tails to explain. He seemed satisfied and rolled over to go to sleep.

Well, okay then. Life is odd. And he’ll be right back. ;)

Bye! Love You!

Jaimie on Feb 6th 2008

Yesterday when CJ was getting on the bus, he stopped in the aisle, turned around, and yelled “Bye!  Love you!”

Honestly, I stopped dead in my tracks as I was walking down the bus steps and almost cried on the spot.

CJ has, of course, said I love you many times before.  He’s even said it to me.  And this isn’t exactly about his communication as much as it is about him realizing how to act in certain situations.  It is refreshingly normal to tell your mommy bye and you love her as you are setting off to school on the bus.  Up until now, CJ had always just gotten on the bus and marched back to his seat, never looking back at me or saying anything.

Still.  Sniff.  I think I still almost want to cry a little.

We’ll see what this morning brings.

This is what I find so amusing about the diet so far

Jaimie on Feb 5th 2008

Matt cleans his plate. Literally. I think he’s afraid if he doesn’t eat every single thing allowed to him, he’ll starve later. So even if he’s mostly full, if he’s got two pieces of melon left, he’ll eat them. Is he allowed an apple for a snack but he doesn’t feel too hungry? He’ll eat it anyway.

Really… I don’t think you’re going to starve. I mean, I’m not expert, but that doesn’t seem the point. There’s actually a large volume of food allowed, as long as you take your volume in veggies and sometimes fruit.  For example, the lunch I just packed for Matt today was:

Medium salad with tomatoes and onions and 1 tbls dressing

2 carrots

2 celery stalks

4 oz tuna

1 wheat pita

So, not so bad, I thought.  Make a sandwich with the tuna and pita and some of the salad veggies, and have a bunch of roughage besides.  He’ll probably still claim to be hungry though.

We’re … adjusting. :)   He even liked the broccoli and potato dish last night.  :)

What Do They Dream…

Jaimie on Feb 4th 2008

Every night when I tuck CJ into bed, the last thing he says to me before he goes to sleep is “I’ll be right back!”

And every night without fail, I wonder to myself, where does he go in his dreams that he thinks he’ll be right back from? Why does he choose to think of sleep as leaving and waking as returning?

I don’t know if he’d be able to explain it or not.

I haven’t asked, because…

I don’t want to dissuade him from going to sleep. ;)
