Who’s Got The Smart Mouth?

Jaimie on Nov 24th 2008

Some highlights from conversations with CJ over the past few days:

CJ:  (playing pirates in the bathtub) “Ahoy Ladies!”

Matt:  “Hon, it’s ‘Ahoy Mateys’”

CJ:  “I don’t care.  Ahoy Ladies!”

—–

Me:  “CJ, put your shoes on, it is almost time for school.”

CJ:  (ignores me as I repeat myself 5 times)

Me:  “CJ, you need your shoes on NOW, the bus is almost here”

CJ:  “I heard you already stop saying that.”

Welcome to life with a four year old :)

Mittens!

Jaimie on Nov 20th 2008

It is cold here.  I live in the midwest, and we’ve been having sub-freezing temps and snow flurries for about a week now.  Subsequently, CJ has needed to wear a hat and gloves to school.

This morning, he told me he’d rather have mittens.  Which is fine, but I find amusing because all he had last year were mittens, and he was adamant this year that he wanted gloves with “5 fingers!” not mittens with “2 fingers!”.  So out we went to find gloves.

And now after a week of wearing them, he wanted his mittens.

And proudly showed the bus driver how he had “2 fingers!”

:)

Wait - What Was I Saying?

Jaimie on Nov 18th 2008

So I was so impressed and happy about CJ’s using turns of phrase and less obvious language to express himself.  And then there was this morning:

CJ: I’m sorry I won’t behave at school today.

Me: What do you mean you won’t behave?  You haven’t been there yet.

CJ: But I feel goofy and I won’t behave.

Me: CJ, we need to use our self control and make good choices here.  You can behave at school today.

CJ: We’ll see.

We’ll see?  Heh.  Cute, but um, not what I was looking for.

He’s at school now, I hope he’s “seeing” how to behave.  ;)

Here Goes Nothing!

Jaimie on Nov 17th 2008

CJ is picking up all sorts of turns of phrase lately.  I think most of them must come from school, and it is really exciting to hear those kinds of spontaneous utterances from him.

Today when he was playing a game, right before his turn he said “Here goes nothing!”.  I was so excited I kissed him.  :)

It is just so cool.  I don’t know how to explain why, but it is cool.  Who knew I would find such things so fascinating.

The Results of Alexa’s Evaluation

Jaimie on Nov 13th 2008

Alexa is still on the mend.  She’s not 100% yet, but she is definitely getting better and will continue to get better.    I hope that the reaction she had is never ever repeated.

In other Alexa news, the early intervention agency came to our house yesterday to give me the formal results of her evaluation and talk about therapy options.  She is more than 2 standard deviations delayed in communication and social skills (tied to communication), which just means she has a significant delay.  Her other areas were fine, and she actually is above expected for her age in a number of areas, including fine motor skills and adaptive skills.  So I selected a speech pathologist from the profiles I was given (as opposed to a developmental therapist) and they are supposed to call me within the next week to set up a weekly appointment.

I’m pretty mellow about it all, all things considered.  I think the allergic reaction scare made me realize that there are worse things than having a speech delay.  And if it persists into next year, I already know how the school system programs work, so there’s that.
